Director Delia - more women should learn to ride

UrbanBiker caught up with @delianolan to hear how she 'caught the bug' for motorcycling..

UB: How long have you been riding and how did get into it?

DD: It’s more than ten years now. My mum and dad both had motorbike licenses and I liked to hear the stories about them riding when they were young. I use to ride pillion with my ex until getting my licence and I got my first bike. I have refused to ride pillion since..

UB: What do you like about riding?

DD: The speed, the noise, the freedom.. how something can be so powerful yet so feminine.. the smells (except when stuck behind a livestock truck) ..

UB: What was first bike?

DD: 1989 Yamaha XV250 Virago aptly named “Dora the explorer”. I recently tried to buy her back to modify her into a café (not so) racer but have yet to convince the current owner ..

UB: How did you end up riding the bike you have now?

DD: I had a Kawasaki ZZR400 (lowered) but never really gelled with it and went shopping for a new bike to celebrate a successful career change. I ended up to my surprise at Wellington Motorcycles (HD Dealer) and rode off on a new Low Rider 883.. I decided not enough power after a short while and I was lucky enough to find my current Sportster 48 .. very low km and lots of shiny bits!

UB: What do you love about her? Is she your forever bike?

DD: Same answer as to ‘what do you like about riding’ because I was thinking about her when I answered that question. She is what I love about riding. Sometimes I think I want to get something a bit bigger but she fits me like a glove. It’s been five years now I don’t think I could sell her but maybe we could add to the family :)

UB: Any last words?

DD: To any women out there (who have thought of giving riding a go). Make the time. Do a 'learn to ride' and 'basic skills course' to get your learners licence. Catch the bug. You’ll love it!
